Perfect Reflections – Cheddar Caves

Photographs of Our Day

Day 88 13th May 2017

We awoke in Burbage and continued our normal fun and laughter with Martin,Linda,Matthew and Charlotte. It had been decided that it would be good to have a day trip to the Cheddar Gorge so minus Matthew, who had to work, we headed off.The gorge itself is impressive but what I hadn’t known or remembered that there was an extensive cave system that it is easily accessible. The other thing the gorge is famous for is its climbing-dotted all over the gorge were climbers giving it  a crack.Speaking to one of them I was told that there were “thousands of routes” at all grades.

The cave system was discovered and developed in the 19th century by a local  Richard Gough.  See Gough’s Cave the initial electric lighting being introduced for visitors in 1899.The focus on visitors s obvious as it has sealed pathways, minimal steps and very good lighting. So we had a quick coffee and headed into the depths. There was an audio presentation as part of the entrance which told of the caves discovery and gave details of some of the more prominent formations.Given the location and perfect temperature in caves we were not surprised to see that it is used as a for storing cheeses whilst they mature.

We then went to another cave systems which had a sound and light presentation however  all of us thought that the natural cave was better. After some afternoon tea the GPS lead us by very narrow back country lanes to Mel’s airbnb where she was to meet Holly for a girl’s weekend.
