St. Kinga’s Chapel and yes the crystals making up the chandeliers are made of salt!

Day 106 31st May 2017

Photographs of Our Day

We had been told by friends that when in Krakow we must go to the Wieliczka Salt Mine.  (See Salt Mines) I have to say that it wasn’t top of ,mind for either of us but these friends and subsequent research seemed to suggest that they were a spectacle worth seeing. After taking Mr Benny for a longish walk we caught the tram for our 6 pm tour.

As you can see from the map the mines consist of many chambers which have been carved out to form lakes, chapels, and presentation areas for salt sculptures. The details of each of the chambers is explained at this link .

We had two  favourite stories, one was  were about the creation of a lake in the Baracz chamber. The lake was of course salt but the miners deliberately increased the salt content so that it would have the characteristices of the Dead Sea.

The other was how the Germans had set up an aircraft production line in the Stazic chamber which was manned by Jewish workers. They left the mark of their confinement by etching a Star of David into the wall of the chamber.
