Day 41 March 27th 2017 London

Met up with Holly and headed to King’s Cross to visit the book barge-Word on the Water. There was much delicious browsing through a great selection of books inside the cabin and out in the sunlight with much putting back, and taking out. Adhering to the carry-one-book-only rule, some purchases were made and we wandered through the local area, sat in the sun and had lunch.

As a random idea we went off to Brixton for coffee. Brixton was an area not well thought of in the 70’s yet talked about now in different – and coffee snob terms.

Once there we had a brief wander and an average coffee. Holly went home as she wasn’t feeling well and we headed off to the Royal Academy of Arts in Picadilly Circus to see the exhibition “Revolution-Russian Art 1917-1932.”.

Fortnum and Mason

As we approached the Royal Academy of Arts we discovered Fortnum and Masons just across the road – irresistable and quintessentially English in our minds. This view was compounded by the store and service.  A man in tails delicately pouring tea samples. Shelves of tea of every variety. Both of us had memories of browsing – probably not buying so in we went.

Not enough of all things Russia after crossing the country we went expecting to see things that resonated. Obviously there were some propaganda pieces and the curator tied the art pieces to the changes occurring in Russia in the period chosen. But what struck me was the modernity of the pieces given the restrictions on artists and the upheaval at that time.

At the end of the day we walked to Brick Lane via Lovage  a juice bar with a difference – including a drink that contained crushed pearls.

Finally home to pack ready to leave London tomorrow for Cambridge.
