Day 1-2 12th and 13th April Singapore and Johannesburg

After a hectic and delightful six months of reconnecting with family and friends and being nomads we departed on our next round of global exploration. We had lots of lovely catch ups with people and feel privileged and thankful for their generosity in providing a roofs over our heads as well in one case a vehicle!!
So after fond farewells from our kids we headed for the airport after a night out at Tulla and headed for Singapore. There we had a great rest at the Ambassador Transit hotel before picking up the next leg to Johannesburg at 1.25 in the am.
Jo’Burg was misty on arrival and we were met by Ivan who dropped as at the Curiocity Hostel. There we were allocated a rooms with double decker bunks and a concrete floor.Mel pointed out that this didn’t meet the description of the apartment that we thought we had booked. We went off for a delicious breakfast across the road while our genial concierge sorted things out.She hiked us down the road to the 12 Decades Art Hotel which has a theatre a cafe and pieces of art scattered throughout the hallways and the rooms themselves. We ended up the “Who Is Herbert Dlomo?( seeĀ Herbert Dhlomo) Room very classy and over the top. After a nap we headed out in the local area waiting for all the bad things to happen to us that we were told about.Instead we found the local precinct of Maboneng on Fox Street in Jeppestown to be lively and arty with a touch of hipster. We were told that it has 24 hour security and saw this in evidence. So a bit of a bubble and it is interesting that a sign on our door says”If you are going into town ask our staff about the safest way”.Like a lot of places undergoing “gentrification” there are tensions between the old and the new. (SeeĀ Evictions in Maboneng)

Went next door to the PataPata restaurant had dinner with live smooth jazz.
