Namfjall

Day 79 29 June

Before leaving Seydisfjordur we head right to the end of the road which gives a view of the head of the fjord. We then go back up the beautiful mountain road heading for Husavik.

On the way we stop at Namfjall mountain at the bottom of which is an area called Hverir a collection of hot mud pools and fumaroles. The latter being vents in the earth from which sulphurous gases escape. It continually amazes us how open the areas are with very little fencing. On the one hand this a fantastic opportunity to get close to the action. On the other with the number of tourists around it would seem to be an accident waiting to happen.

We move on to today’s destination which is a summer house just outside Husavik. We are looking forward to staying in one place for a sustained period, in this case six nights. We have chosen Husavik as being an ideal jumping off spot to explore the north-east.It also has the distinction of being the whale watching capital of Iceland.
