The Guinness Book of Records award-winning Mary statue

Days 153-154 29 Sep-30 Sep

We leave our lovely Istanbul apartment and headed for the huge bus station at Esenler. Got on our Metro Bus and headed for Bulgaria and the city of Haskovo. It is here where we will meet our friend and guide Nadia. All goes well until we hit the border where we hang for about 4 hours behind a queue of other buses. Once through we get processed quickly and get our way.

Arrive in Haskovo three hours late find our hotel and have a late dinner.

Next morning grab a great Italian coffee at the Mokarico cafe and have a chat with the owner and friendly locals about Bulgaria and of course kangaroos!

Head off to see Haskovo’s main attraction the world’s largest statue of the Virgin Mary certified by the Guinness Book of records. We both find it slightly underwhelming bit gives a nice overview of the town and it is a pleasant walk back to the hotel.

Nadia arrives and we are delighted to see her again. We catch up on all her news and we head to our beautiful accommodation next to the Khardzali Reservoir see here The Guest Villas Ecopolis Glavatartsi.

We dine on a dinner of fresh fish at a small local restaurant.
