Glasgow Central Station

Days 64 – 68  June 14 – 18th 2018 Glasgow

It was four nights in Glasgow and most of it was slow time catching up on emails, writing, resting, reading. Fortunately this plan fitted with a bout of very chilly weather making it less than desirable to be out and about.

Our little apartment was about 15 minutes by bus from the centre of Glasgow. We managed to get ourselves in to the city once. We had all we needed close by and barely left our “home”.

Highlights

A lovely lunch in the warmth of Battlefield Rest – a most unusual building apparently used as a resting and courting place for Tram Travellers! The building has a history dating back to 1915. The menu, staff and interior all combine to give a very Italy meets Scotland feel – even the traditional Italian dishes have a little Scottish twist – Haggis Polpette!!

The building itself has an exterior of pale green and white tiles in contrast with the red stone buildings all around, combined with its corner position and decoration the building stands out.

Wandering the streets of Glasgow and bumping into a Cath Kidston shop – with a sale on – and just as I was complaining that my travel bag was falling apart. A lovely new bag walked out of the shop –

Walking around our neighbourhood and marvelling at the work in building the rows and rows of what was tenement blocks – rows and rows of red stone multistory buildings,

Sunday Roast at a Scottish Pub with the World cup diverting everyones attention from time to time.

Leaving Glasgow for Iceland had moments of fraughtness! Excited to find we could use Google maps off line we set off in the car to drop the A-Z of the UK off at an Op shop – it was the only way I could live with the expense!!! Trying to get us on track I tried to delete the Op shop and get back on the airport road – everything went. Finally with a silent car Chris managed to get his to work and we head off.

After dropping the car off we managed to check in and get to on our full flight only to be delayed – a young girl in a school group got to the door and despite encouragement from everyone including the Pilot – could not get on board.

Finally Kevlavik – a slightly disorienting arrival with a mass of people everywhere and people departing as we were coming in creating a sense of chaos. Decided to get a little Duty Free having heard the cost here – unfortunately a can of beer sprang out of the casing, spurted out all over the conveyer belt and the checkout woman who was very understanding.

Lets forget the bus and get a cab to our Guesthouse I suggested – which despite the ridiculous cost for a 6minute ride we did. You can’t put a price on domestic bliss.
