Samarkand to Bukhara via Shakhrisabz Day 36 4th June

We have tried to explain how these countries have developed myths and legends around Heroic figures. In Uzbekistan it is Timur (Tamerlane) and here in Shakhrisabz the reality and myth come together into what might be called by skeptics a theme park.Unesco have even expressed concern about it suggesting they may remove it from World heritage listingĀ  See Unesco. Formerly known as Kesh Timur was born here in 1336 so it is an important site for Uzbeks and it is another example of his aggressive building program.

We walked the length of the complex stopping at a museum featuring his life and works on the way.But the places of visual interest seemed to be few and far between.

The mausoleum built for him but not used.He died during a campaign to China as is buried in Samarkand at the Gur Emir.

Picked up by our driver and headed into Bukhara.Very good first impressions-our hotel is a renovated madrassa and the town itself has a very walkable and well preserved city centre.Looking forward to exploring more tomorrow.
